Welcome to Vertigo

A Green New Deal Now!  Vertigo supports the Green New Deal as promoted by The Green New Deal Group led by the New Economics Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme. As the world wakes up to the fact that we are being 'crunched' on all sides and that 'Peak Everything' is just around the corner, the time is right to take a bold and decisive turn towards a sustainable future.

We must re-orienate all of our markets and systems to line up with the planet's natural capital. As Pavan Sukhdev of Deutsche Bank states:

The capital loss to financial firms in the City and Wall Street has been estimated as $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion. In TEEB's first phase report which we presented in May, we looked at the extent of losses taking place as a result of deforestation and degradation. We estimated the loss in human welfare as a capital item, and worked out that this was $2 to $4.5 trillion per year, every year, for the last several years.

And it will continue, if we carry on with business as usual. Why is it that a one-off loss of $1.5 trillion in financial capital to a group of Wall Street firms attracts so much attention, whereas the ongoing loss per annum of twice this amount of natural capital is barely reported?

We have a duty to ensure that we turn the current financial crisis to our advantage and emerge with truly sustainable systems. This includes how we create our places here in the UK. Can we really rely on companies who are entirely profit motivated and highly reliant on land speculation to create the places we need and the planet deserves?

Our background

Vertigo was established by Mike Roberts, a chartered surveyor with over 20 years’ experience in the UK property sector.

For most of his career Mike has been with Colliers CRE and its predecessor businesses Gooch Webster and Gooch and Wagstaff, during which time Mike had a number of roles including Head of Office Agency and Development, Managing Partner/Director and Head of Strategic Consulting. Mike therefore has a wide ranging understanding of the property sector.

A rather worrying teenage propensity for bird watching was an early indication of Mike’s passion for the environment. This has been complemented over the years by an increasing understanding of the importance of place and the burning need for great design within our built environment.

In the last few years Mike has had the opportunity of focussing on the development markets and has been inspired by the challenges of sustainability. The rapid move of green issues from Arran cardigans to designer chic has been mirrored by the move from niche to main stream.

At Colliers CRE Mike established the Sustainability Action Team and raised the profile of sustainable issues across the business of sustainable development. Mike also led Colliers on to the UK Green Building Council as founding members and became a Board member of this organisation.

Mike is a Non-executive director at Lime Technology Limited, an advisory board member of the Green Building Council and remains a consultant on sustainability issues to Colliers CRE. He is also Project Director for Hab Housing, the residential developer founded by Kevin McCloud.
