September 2011-It is clear that the battle for embedding sustainable development into the UK is becoming more and more difficult. Severe economic stresses, inertia and vested interests clearly make creative change much more difficult to achieve. We can add to this the efforts of the 'Greenest Government ever' who have shown their true colours with the proposals to increase the Motorway speed limit-and astonishingly to spend £250m to re-introduce weekly bin collections. However these feeble attempts to ingratiate themselves with those that feel it is our right to squander resources without a thought for anyone or anything, will not deter or deflect those working for a fairer and happier future.
Vertigo was established by Mike Roberts, a chartered surveyor with over 20 years’ experience in the UK property sector.
For much of his career Mike was with Colliers and its predecessor businesses Gooch Webster and Gooch and Wagstaff, during which time Mike had a number of roles including Head of Office Agency and Development, Managing Partner/Director and Head of Strategic Consulting. Mike therefore has a wide ranging understanding of the property sector.
A rather worrying teenage propensity for bird watching was an early indication of Mike’s passion for the environment. This has been complemented over the years by an increasing understanding of the importance of place and the burning need for great design within our built environment.
In the last few years Mike has had the opportunity of focussing on the development markets and has been inspired by the challenges of sustainability. The realisation that we cannot continue to live beyond the earth's resources will lead to a fundamental revision to how things are done. The greatest challenge for the built environment for generations.
At Colliers CRE Mike established the Sustainability Action Team and raised the profile of sustainable issues across the business. Mike also led Colliers on to the UK Green Building Council as founding members and became a Board member of this organisation.
Mike is now an Ambassador for the UK Green Building Council. He is also Project Director for Hab Housing, the residential developer founded by Kevin McCloud and for Environmental Power International, an advanced thermal process technology company.
